Tobyhanna Township & Mount Pocono Seeking Residents to Help with Their ABCs
A great way to get involved in your local government is to learn your ABCs. There are a number of openings on Authorities, Boards, Commissions, and Committees (the "ABCs") in our local municipalities. Service requires no special expertise or knowledge. A desire to get involved is the only prerequisite.
Tobyhanna Township, needs a resident for the Zoning Hearing Board. The Zoning Hearing Board acts as a quasi-judicial body, or “local court”, for zoning matters. The five-member panel hears various appeals from decisions of the zoning officer, in hardship cases it can grant relief from the literal terms of the ordinance, decides challenges to the validity of ordinances, and reviews applications for “special exception uses”, which are permitted uses requiring a review. Supervisors appoint members for overlapping five-year terms. They meet only as needed. The current opening is to replace a member who resigned. That term expires December 31, 2023. Service on the board is open to adults who have resided in the township for at least one year at the time of appointment. To apply and for more information, contact the township at (570) 646-1212. Mount Pocono Borough wants residents for the Municipal Authority, Planning Commission, and Library Board. All positions are open to adults who have resided in the borough for at least a year. The Planning Commission is a seven-member body advising the Council on matters of community growth and development. At the direction of Council, the Planning Commission may be required to prepare a Comprehensive Plan for the Borough, to prepare and make recommendations on an official map and/or to prepare, review, or comment on proposed Land Use Control Ordinances, including Zoning and the Subdivision/Land Development Ordinances. The PC meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm.
The Municipal Authority is an independent body with members appointed by the Borough Council to four-year terms. It is responsible for the borough's sewer and wastewater system, collection, and treatment. Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month @ 7:00 pm, and on the 4th Thursday at 5 pm. The Library Board oversees the operation of the Pocono Mountain Library. The contributing municipalities appoint residents to represent their municipalities on the board. The board meets the first Wednesday of each month, in the second-floor meeting room at the library. Apply for any of the Mount Pocono openings with a letter of interest to Joshua Walker, the Borough Manager, at email@example.com.
