PSBA Offering Free Online Session on Running for School Board
MECHANICSBURG – Interested in running for a seat on the Pocono Mountain School Board? The Pennsylvania School Board Association wants to help. Who better to tell you about the ins-and-outs of being a school board director than the PSBA?
The Pennsylvania primary election is May 18, 2021. The Pocono Mountain School District Board of Directors is elected by districts. Region 1 is Barrett, Pocono, and Paradise Townships and has two seats up in 2021. They are currently held by Annabella Lastowski and James Gamble. Region 2 represents Jackson, Tobyhanna, and Tunkhannock Townships. There are also two seats on the ballot in Region 2; they are now held by John Coyle and Frank Pecci. Finally, Region 3, Coolbaugh Township and Mount Pocono Borough, has one seat on the ballot this year, currently occupied by Michael Stern.
The first day to circulate petitions to get a spot on the May Municipal Primary ballot is February 16. Petitions will be available for download on the Monroe County Election & Voting Website in early February.
Later this month, the PSBA is offering free panel-style informational workshops, held virtually. Called “Starting Out: A Seat on the School Board - What it Takes to be Elected and Fulfill the Responsibilities”, the one-hour panel-style program will be offered twice a day on Thursday, January 21, and Monday, January 25. The Thursday, January 21 sessions will be broadcast at 8 am and 6 pm; the Monday, January 25 sessions will be available at Noon and again at 4 pm. Each session is live and interactive.
During these sessions, which will be held virtually on the Zoom platform, PSBA will cover the core considerations for candidates that are contemplating running for school board. The live, interactive programs are intended to afford attendees a greater understanding of the position to help them better evaluate whether to pursue election. Topics covered will include the basic school director roles and responsibilities, along with what to expect if elected, coming firsthand from experienced school directors. The panel discussion will also address the nuances and procedural steps of getting on the ballot. Each of the panels will be led by past PSBA presidents Kathy Swope and Roberta Marcus, and PSBA Senior Director of Legal Services Stuart L. Knade, Esq. They will be joined by a current district superintendent and two current school board members. The superintendent and board members vary for each of the four presentations. Interested participants can review the full panel for each presentation from the links on the PSBA calendar: https://www.psba.org/events/.
There is also a wealth of information available on this webpage: https://www.psba.org/advocacy-and-news/resources/run-school-board-guide-school-board-candidates-pennsylvania/ for more details and for those unable to attend. Participation is free, but registration for the Zoom events is required.
