Pennsylvania COVID Cases Top 600, Monroe County with 43, as State Suffers 5th Death

HARRISBURG (MAR 23 2020) -- For the thirteenth day in a row, the number of Coronavirus, or COVID-19, cases in Pennsylvania increased by a factor of at least 30% yesterday. In numbers released today, as of midnight yesterday the Pennsylvania Department of Health acknowledges 644 infections, affecting over half of the state counties. The number of infections increased by 165 over the numbers released yesterday.

Johns Hopkins University reported today that the fourth and fifth Pennsylvania COVID deaths have occurred in Lehigh and Montgomery Counties. Neither those deaths not the death of a 56 year old East Stroudsburg man yesterday were included in the numbers released by the Department of Health today.

Monroe County has 43 reported cases, an increase of 40% over the number released yesterday. Montgomery and Philadelphia County have 129 and 128 cases, respectively.

Nationally, the United States has now exceeded 41,000 cases, with 479 deaths. New York State has nearly half the nation's cases, with almost 17,000, with 10,764 in New York City, which has had 98 deaths as of this morning. In an effort to identify areas of the outbreak and take targeted measures, New York has tested more residents per capita than any other state or country.

Worlwide there are more than 360,000 reported cases, 15,000 deaths, and about 100,000 recovered. China has 81,500 active cases, followed by Italy with 59,000, then the US.

State and local police in Pennsylvania this morning will start enforcing the mandatory shutdown of businesses in the state. Violators could face fines of up to $300, 90 days in jail, and up to twice any profits made from the violation.
